The DOJ has announced that Mark Sorensen, the former owner of a Durable Medical Equipment (DME) supplier, was sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison for his role in an $87 million healthcare fraud kickback conspiracy. Chilivis Grubman attorneys previously wrote about Sorensen after he was convicted of one count of conspiracy and three counts of payment of illegal kickbacks in January 2023.
In September 2019, Sorensen and fifty-two others were indicted as part of a Midwest health care fraud enforcement action. According to documents presented at trial, Symed Inc., Sorensen’s Chicago DME pharmacy, paid illegal kickbacks in exchange for patient leads needed to bill Medicare, TRICARE, and the Department of Labor’s Office of Workers’ Compensation programs. Sorensen also paid for illegitimate DME prescriptions, and some beneficiaries were tricked into receiving multiple braces that they neither needed nor wanted. As a result of the foregoing scheme, Sorensen and his co-conspirators received $23.6 million through Symed.
In addition to three and a half years in prison, Sorensen was ordered to forfeit $1.8 million.
