Kentrell Gaulden, widely known by his stage name NBA YoungBoy, faces escalating legal challenges spanning multiple jurisdictions. After just posting a $100,000 bond in Cache County, Utah, last week, the Baton Rouge rapper finds himself now held without bond in the Weber County Jail, also in Utah.
Gaulden was booked into the Weber County Jail on May 13 in connection with a criminal case comprising over 60 felony counts related to prescription fraud and weapons charges. Judge Joseph Bean cited to Gaulden’s potential flight risk as the rationale for issuing the no-bail warrant on April 30.
The charges against Gaulden stem from what officials describe as a “large-scale prescription fraud ring.” Allegations claim Gaulden participated in a scheme to obtain controlled substances such as promethazine and codeine from pharmacies across Utah, using fake prescriptions. According to a Cache County investigator’s affidavit, Gaulden came under suspicion after his vehicle was impounded during the arrest of individuals also accused of being involved in the conspiracy.
In Weber County, Gaulden faces one weapons count and two prescription fraud counts. Authorities discovered at least one handgun in his Utah residence. Gaulden’s felon status prohibits his possession of firearms.
It remains uncertain whether Gaulden will remain in Weber County until his trial. However, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Baton Rouge stated last week that upon his release from Utah state custody, Gaulden will be detained by federal authorities in Louisiana where he faces trial on a possession of a firearm charge in Baton Rouge. U.S. District Judge Shelly Dick, who is presiding over the federal case, signed an order May 2 postponing the trial to a date yet to be determined.
