As reported by Sustain Atlanta, MARTA has revised its funding plan for transit projects funded by the $2.7 billion transit sales tax approved by Atlanta voters in 2016. The initial plan, released in May, allocated $370 million for 7 miles of light rail** along the northeast and southwest Beltline. However, after concerns were raised by transit advocates and community leaders that the investment was insufficient, MARTA added $200 million as a down payment for further Beltline rail expansion.
To accommodate this adjustment, funding for the Clifton Road/Emory light rail project was reduced by more than $150 million, with additional contributions expected from Emory University and other partners. The revised plan also includes funding for light rail along Campbellton Road, expansion of the streetcar, and 13 miles of bus rapid transit (BRT).
While the City of Atlanta has significant input on transit planning, MARTA ultimately makes the final funding decisions. According to Sustain Atlanta, a vote on the updated plan is scheduled for October 4.
